In 1963, Canadian author Mordecai Richler published a satirical novel called The Incomparable Atuk. It told the story of a naïve Inuit who moves from the frozen north into modern city life, exposing the absurdities and hypocrisies of urban society. Years later, Hollywood saw potential in adapting the book into a comedy. Screenwriter Tod Carroll reworked the setting, turning Atuk into a native Alaskan who finds himself overwhelmed in New York City.
What followed, however, was not a lighthearted comedy—but one of Hollywood’s most chilling curses.
John Belushi: The First Victim
The first actor chosen to play Atuk was Saturday Night Live legend John Belushi. Excited by the script, Belushi seemed the perfect fit. But before production could begin, tragedy struck. On March 5, 1982, Belushi died of a drug overdose at just 33 years old. Many now point to this as the first sign of the so-called Curse of Atuk.
The project was shelved for years, but Hollywood wasn’t ready to give up.
Sam Kinison: Death After Filming Began
In 1988, comedian Sam Kinison took on the role and even began filming scenes. But tensions erupted when Kinison demanded rewrites. Production stalled, lawsuits followed, and the project collapsed into legal limbo. Before the movie could resume, Kinison was tragically killed in a car accident on April 10, 1992, outside Needles, California.
Another promising comedy icon was gone, and the Atuk curse gained notoriety.
John Candy: A Sudden Heart Attack
Two years later, the script surfaced again—this time in the hands of beloved comedian John Candy. While filming in Mexico, Candy reportedly had the Atuk script with him when he suffered a fatal heart attack on March 4, 1994. Unlike Kinison, Candy never even had the chance to step in front of the camera as Atuk.
The curse seemed immediate and inescapable.
Chris Farley: Following Belushi’s Path
Hollywood still pressed on, offering the role to another SNL star: Chris Farley. Much like his idol John Belushi, Farley was enthusiastic about taking on Atuk. But before the project could move forward, Farley died of a drug overdose on December 18, 1997—also at the age of 33.
Once again, the film lost its lead actor in a tragedy eerily similar to those before it.
Phil Hartman: Murder After Reading the Script
Farley had shared the script with his friend, fellow comedian Phil Hartman, considering him for another role. Just months later, Hartman was murdered by his wife in their Encino, California home on May 28, 1998.
Hartman became the fifth high-profile comedian linked to the Atuk script to meet an untimely end.
The Film That Hollywood Refuses to Touch
Since Hartman’s death, no actor has dared to attempt the role of Atuk again. The screenplay remains locked away at United Artists, whispered about in Hollywood circles as one of the most cursed scripts in movie history.
Whether coincidence, tragic lifestyle choices, or something far darker, the story of the Atuk curse continues to haunt Hollywood—and ensures that the movie will almost certainly never be made.
